ABOUT US

Welcome! Sisters in Science™, LLC is a company that provides educational programs for kindergarten through high school girls and boys. The company was established in 2001, by a scientist, educator, and creator of educational programs for children to show them that science is in their own backyards. There are several programs all housed under Sisters in Science™, LLC. Girls and boys have been participating in these programs for over a decade now in their school classrooms, in after school programs, Saturday academies, summer camps, internships, and through tutor programs.

Teachers and other educational professionals have also been participating in Sisters in Science™, LLC programs for over a decade by conducting program activities in their classrooms to participating in professional development institutes. Even parents have been participating in our programs over the years through special events hosted for families from family fencing tournaments, to science quiz bowl events.

Whether you are a girl or a boy wanting to learn science in a fun and innovative way, a teacher or other educational professional who wants to learn and teach innovative lessons in your classroom, or a parent or a community member who wants to host special events for your daughter, son, or community; Sisters in Science™, LLC has something for everyone.

 

OUR MISSION

Science taught in the classroom is typically based on prescriptive texts that do not allow children to be inquisitive scientists. Our programs engage the scientist in all children through fun and innovative methods, encouraging children to learn science and mathematics, through exploration and inquiry, in new ways.

The multiple programs of Sisters in Science™, LLC address the need for girls and boys in elementary, middle and high school to gain equitable access to science and mathematics education. Specifically, this need is based on the rising research-based public concern over the diversity gap in science, mathematics, and technology. Sisters in Science™, LLC offers six innovative science programs designed to foster equity, access and inclusion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Sisters in Science™, LLC recognizes the significant impact intervention programs targeting girls and boys have on academic success. In every respect, Sisters in Science™, LLC accepts the call for systematic reforms that understand the limitations girls and boys face in post secondary education and employment opportunities in science related fields.

Awarded the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education’s (AACTE) Gender Equity Award in Women’s Leadership, Sisters in Science™, LLC programs have been nationally recognized for exemplary accomplishments in programming and innovations related to leadership development and gender equity in education. Through receipt of the award, sponsored by the AACTE’s Committee on Women’s Issues, Sisters in Science™, LLC programs serve as a model for others in the education profession, advancing the agenda for achievement in science.

Implementation of the programs was originally funded by the National Science Foundation and the U. S. Department of Education over a decade ago. The Sisters in Science ™, LLC programs focus on the diversity inherent in learning through various tools by which scientific and mathematical principles can be explored, analyzed, and communicated. By employing multiple vehicles to engage their interests, girls and boys are encouraged to become researchers and to explore the underlying principles.

 

THE PROGRAMS

Early Sisters in Science™ (eSIS) & Early Brothers of Science™ (eBOS) program aims to increase both conceptual development of science knowledge and cognitive growth. The thirty experiments deal with specific scientific concepts while also addressing literacy development. The program is based on the national science standards. Cognitive growth is further enhanced with developmental language-based levels. Each experiment begins with a task requiring matching and progresses with objectives for discriminating, categorizing, sequencing, and making associations. There are 150 science activities in all.

Sisters in Science™ (SIS) & Brothers of Science™ (BOS) program addresses the needs of girls and boys in gaining equitable access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Through science explorations that focus on the environment, the scientific knowledge is structured around five unifying themes: science process skills, systems, constancy and change, models, and scale. The program is based on the national science benchmarks. The twenty experiments deal with specific scientific concepts while also addressing one or more of the unifying themes. This structure provides for the development of “big ideas”, rather than isolated concepts. Through science explorations, developed to promote equity in STEM disciplines, elementary school girls and boys are challenged to achieve in STEM disciplines in a non-competitive and collaborative atmosphere.

All Sisters in Science™ (ASIS) & All Brothers of Science™ (ABOS) program addresses the needs of girls and boys with disabilities in gaining equitable access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Through science explorations that focus on the environment, that are adapted from the original Sisters in Science™ and Brothers of Science™ program, the scientific knowledge is structured around five unifying themes: science process skills, systems, constancy and change, models, and scale. The program is based on the national science standards. The twenty experiments deal with specific scientific concepts while also addressing one or more of the unifying themes. This structure provides for the development of “big ideas”, rather than isolated concepts. Through science explorations, developed to promote equity and adaptability in STEM disciplines, elementary school girls and boys are challenged to achieve in STEM disciplines in a non-competitive and collaborative atmosphere.

Sisters in Sports Science™ (SISS) & Brothers of Sports Science™ (BOSS) program addresses the needs of girls and boys in gaining equitable access to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Through sports, girls and boys not only develop science and mathematics knowledge, but also build rapport and trust in an inviting atmosphere through the vehicle of sports. The Sisters in Sports Science™ & Brothers of Sports Science™ program is based on the national science and mathematics standards. The entire program includes multiple science and mathematics driven activities that feature a sport as a vehicle through which science and mathematics is learned. The program features eight different sports science modules (basketball, volleyball, tennis, fencing, golf, health related fitness, track & field, and soccer) that focus on different science concepts learned at the middle school level. There are 32 total science lessons. As a supplement to this curriculum, Sisters in ScienceTM, LLC partnered with Whyville to create an online virtual world learning experience where children can conduct virtual experiments, collect and share data, as well as play games to learn about speed, acceleration, and friction. Info-Sisters in Science Career Opportunities Matter ™ (iSIS.com) & Info-Brothers of Science Career Opportunities Matter ™ (iBOS.com) program is an intense science program for high school girls and boys. Combining technology, hands-on science explorations, and a yearly research project, girls and boys are introduced to a wide number of STEM related careers. In an effort to promote awareness, the program teaches the girls and boys the different aspects of scientific research. The intervention matches the girls and boys with individuals in science based careers. The scientists guide the girls and boys through the process of research and completion of their project.

Sisters in Science in the Community™ (SISCOM) & Brothers of Science in the Community™ (BOSCOM) program is a year long multifaceted educational intervention program that focuses on using sports as a vehicle for science and mathematics learning for middle school girls and boys. The Sisters in Science in the Community™ & Brothers of Science in the Community™ program addresses the needs of girls and boys in gaining equitable access to science and mathematics education. Through sports, girls and boys not only develop science and mathematics knowledge, but also build rapport and trust in an inviting atmosphere through the vehicle of sports. The Sisters in Science in the Community™ & Brothers of Science in the Community™ program is based on the national science and mathematics standards. SISCOM Article

Sisters in Science Dissemination and Outreach Project (SISDO) & Brothers of Science Dissemination and Outreach Project (BOSDO) has been created to provide students, teachers, researchers, and the general public with research based information promoting the “best practices” in a movement towards gender-equitable science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. In response to the disproportionate number of women in science-based fields, the program is comprised of three distinct components such as publications, educational programming, and technology resources. The primary goal of the Sisters in Science Dissemination and Outreach™ Project & Brothers of Science Dissemination and Outreach™ Project is to provide access to meaningful research on the importance of gender equity in science, mathematics, technology, and engineering to the general public as well as educators. Most importantly, the Sisters in Science Dissemination and Outreach™ Project & Brothers of Science Dissemination and Outreach™ Project strives to link classroom teachers and researchers in order to build relationships that connect the academy and the classroom.
